-Tips and Tricks-

Currently black and white photos are in trend, but I will let you in a secret. Black and white photos highlight the different tones of lighting throughout out the photo; which people tend to enjoy It’s authentic, real, and dose not feel like an impossible standard to reach because it’s not “perfect”.

-Black and white photos-

Let’s start with this photo on the top left. It looks nice, the back round is balanced. But let’s look at the subject… notice how half the body is tan, and the other half of the body looks as white as snow. This picture is a perfect example of spotty lighting.

If you read my past article 4 Golden Hour Tips you will know what I am talking about. If not read it right now to enlighten yourself on the topic of spotty lighting!

When I was doing this photo shoot it was about mid afternoon; what was hard about it was the harsh light. Because the sun is at it’s peak brightness, and if you are shooting in a area with a lot of trees, (which I was) it makes the pockets of light that the trees provide a lot harder to work with, and less forgiving because of the harsh light that seeps through the pockets. Creating an even bigger difference between shade, and full on light.

But here is the secret … most photographers would take this picture and put in the archives of “do not use”. They would call this a mistake. But really all you need to do is turn it black and white! If you have a picture with spotty lighting that you don’t like, and is not fixable. Try turning it black and white!
